Quality is par for the course

Mike Nierwienski takes his moving business personally.
He’s the guy who answers the phone when you call Fairway Moving Services.
He’s the guy who comes out and gives you the estimate.
He’s the guy who shows up on moving day.
Nierwienski was in the moving business since 1987 in Maryland, and is in it again on the Grand Strand.
He started working with United Van Lines in ‘87, worked for Ace Relocation Systems, an Atlas affiliate, for several years, and had his own company. “In 1999, I had the opportunity to buy my first truck and went from being an employee of Ace to being an owner/ operator under contract,” he explains.
“Doing it that way enabled me to start doing it for myself but still have a good paying job with a bigger company because they hired me and my crew and my truck.”
Nierwienski, moved to Carolina Forest in Sept. 2006,
ready for a change.
He’d been in the moving business a long time, “was getting burned out, and needed a break,” he says.
Opening Club 50 Fitness Center in the Piggly Wiggly Shopping Center in Carolina Forest was the break he thought he needed.
But, after only a few months, Nierwienski found himself planning to go back into the moving industry again.
In April of 2008, he opened Fairway Moving Services.
He is involved in every aspect of his company.
“You’re dealing with the owner from beginning to end,” he says. “If there’s a problem, you don’t have to make a phone call.“I’m right there on the job.”
With the slogan ‘Where quality is par for the course,’ Nierwienski played off the golf term ‘fairway’ when he named his business. But Fairway Moving Services has another meaning too. “It’s not just a golf term, it implies the fair and ethical way of doing business also,” he says.
Fairway Moving Services, which does local and long distance moving, packs and unpacks, loads and unloads rental trucks, and sells boxes. “We do it all,” the businessman says. It’s important, Nierwienski explains, to learn as much as possible from a customer before the actual move. “My work really starts before the move because the most important part of every job is communication,” he says. “The more information I can get from a customer about their move, the better prepared I will be. “The customer doesn’t know what I need to know, so as the professional mover, it’s my responsibility to ask the right questions.” For example: Are there three flights of stairs? An elevator? Can the truck be parked close to the house? Is there a 300 foot walk from the front door to the driveway? Is a piano board needed? How much bubble wrap? “When a salesman gives the estimate, he’ll promise the customer the world and fail to pass that information on to the movers coming to the house,” Nierwienski says.
“Then it’s frustrating not just for the customer but also for the mover.” That is exactly why Nierwienski is on every job Fairway Moving Services does. “When I give people the estimate,” he says, “I tell them that when the next estimator comes out, he’ll give them the estimate, but he won’t be the one who moves them.”
